About Success by 6
Success By 6 is identified with a community’s activities undertaken to ensure that children under the age of six enter school prepared to be successful throughout the years that follow.
At KHQ, Success by 6 is an all-station effort to help get young kids ready for school.
“Success by 6 has made it so visible in our community – that it’s important that children have the opportunity to be read to when they’re newborns, when they’re infants, when they’re toddlers. And just that public visibility, I think, has been really instrumental in helping kids be ready for kindergarten and preschool when they start,” said Dr. Nancy Stowell, Superintent of Spokane Public Schools.
Success by 6 helps give parents the tools they need to prepare for success in school by age six.
Success by 6 news stories play prominently in our top-rated newscasts and offer up-to-date parenting information. Success by 6 events meet the needs of children and families in our community through book and food drives, car seat safety checks, a school supplies drive and much more.
Our signature PSA series, “My Favorite Book”, spotlights local leaders, athletes and celebrities as they remember their favorite book as a child and encourage parents to read to their children.
“I think Success by 6 is pretty visible in the community,” said Sally Chilson from the Spokane Public Library. “I really like how it shows people from all walks of life who read to their children.”
While it begins with a book, Success by 6 is a multi-faceted program that devotes time to every aspect of a child’s development. Whether it’s health and safety, nutrition or reading tips, the goal is to prepare little ones to by physically, mentally and socially ready for school by age six.
